New DVD by Wendy Froud

Post by Clare (HMenchantments) on Sun Jun 22, 2008 5:03 pm

Hi All

I've just received this news from World of Froud.....

If you are a fan of the Wendy Froud DVD, You'll be glad to know she is bringing out a brand new dvd in the fall... cheers

here's the info................(Taken for newsletter & site)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WENDY FROUD'S workshops sell out and NEW DVD coming this fall!

Wendy's national doll making workshop tour was a great success. All the workshops sold out and all attendees were thrilled to work so closely with Wendy and Toby in creating their own faerie dolls. Wendy really enjoyed the experience and will surely be returning to the US again next year for her Spring workshops. We are in the midst of planning some very special workshops and presentations with Brian, Wendy and Toby for this summer and fall so please watch this site for upcoming announcements.

When Wendy was in Los Angeles in May for her workshops there, she also filmed her next doll making DVD for the Gnomon Workshop which will feature how to make fantasy figures. The DVD will be released this fall; please watch the site for the release date.

Really looking forward to this coming out... I just loved the first one!!! Very Happy

They're doing a special workshop before Faerieworlds this year -- Brian is going to teach with Wendy...if only I had $600 to spare!

I've never understood that either! Is there not enough demand over here for her to do a workshop? I for one would jump at the chance to go to a workshop of hers!
The new DVD sounds great! If you actually go to the Gnomon Workshop interview they did with her she mentions a little more about this new DVD. Clare, did you get her fairy one?

I attended one of her workshops in April and she did talk about possibly doing one in the UK. I don't know if they are really planning it, or if it was just talk, but at least they are considering it. There is hope! Yeah

Re: New DVD by Wendy Froud

Hi All!!

Great News the new Wendy Froud DVD ' Creating Character Figures'
Comes out on the 12th January... they are pre-ordering now if interested.

Here's what info I have from the froud Newsletter & Site

Creating a Character Figure
with Wendy Froud

$45.00

In this two-disc DVD workshop, renowned artist Wendy Froud explains and demonstrates how to create a character figure of your own design. Wendy reveals her process in step-by-step detail, beginning with a discussion of how to use reference to inspire the look and feel of your designs. She sculpts three different character heads, covering a variety of techniques for giving personality to your figure including facial expressions, wrinkles and lines. After painting each head and discussing ways to add skin detail such as age spots, she chooses one head to turn into a full character. Wendy then covers sculpting hands and feet, fabricating the body and costuming the character complete with boots, hat and staff. This DVD is meant to follow Wendy’s first DVD Creating a Faery Figure and focuses on character sculpting and costuming without the same emphasis given to body fabricating.

Topics Covered:

Using Reference
Making an armature
sculpting the head
Sculpting wrinkles and lines
Painting Face details
applying hair
Fabricating the body
Costuming
finishing the figure

I've just bought my copy, and at the moment it is cheaper to buy it direct from the Froud Site at the price of $45 then on the Gnomon Workshop, as they are currently selling it at $49.

For all members in the UK wishing to Buy this DVD.. the cost is $45 + $9.50 P&P which works out about £33.
The DVD is also Region 0

Re: New DVD by Wendy Froud

Post by Clare (HMenchantments) on Mon Jan 19, 2009 8:59 pm

Okay I've watched the second DVD and I have to say I'm a little disappointed, this dvd wasn't as detailed, if that's the right word, as the first.
In this episode, Wendy first makes 4 different characters heads, two men, a woman, & a elf/pixie.... Which take up the first disc and the beginning of the second.... (Where as in the last dvd she only made the one).. the rest of the second disc shows adding a body and clothing to one of the characters.
This sound wonderful, but in her first dvd, 'Creating a Fairy Figure', she took her time to create just the one creation, and went into more detail into how to make the separate parts... in this one it feels rushed, and she seems to skim over areas where you would generally like to learn more.
As well I felt that if you hadn't seen the first dvd you may get a little lost, as to what she is doing... as instead of showing you the method in full, she just refers you back to her previous dvd....
However apart from these factors the dvd does have some good points.. and does show some useful tips and ways of creating set things, and
as always, the finished creations are amazing.

I think my problem was I was spoilt with the first dvd, and expected too much from the second...
I would still recommend them to anyone wanting to learn more about creating figures, as they do provide you with the bases to get you started.... but for me her first dvd still remains the best.

I have to admit to being a little disappointed with this one too. Not so much what Wendy was teaching but the DVD quality. It almost seemed it was a rush job - get her in and out as quick as possible! There were background noises, the camera work wasn't as smooth and the transition from first to second disc was rather abrupt - the second disc started mid-sentence!
But Wendy's work was very interesting, creating old and character faces seemed so easy! She starts off with faces that look the same and transforms them all into completely different characters! Watching the first one does help though with more detail of costuming etc.
Despite my gripes about this one I'm still glad I got it for Wendy's creativity. There were definitely some interesting points and I loved the wizard she made! Very Happy
